Shag Pillow

I got together with my friend Lisa again and you know what that means…..

CRAFT TIME!!
She has been into making pillows lately and has LOTS of cute ones.
I’m not a great sewer, but I wanted to attempt one like she made.  She had the cutest shag pillow.
Lisa originally got the idea from V and Co. and there is a great tutorial.
However, we mixed it up a little and did it a little different.  Here is what we did…
I bought 1 yard of knit fabric and 1/2 yard of a matching cotton fabric.
 I also bought a 16 X 16 pillow form.
I cut 1 1/2 inch wide long strips and then cut them every 4 inches.
I made piles of 13 and laid them out like this.
Then I cut my cotton fabric into a 16 1/2 in square.
I added the 1/2 inch for the seam allowance because I wanted it to fit my pillow pretty snug.
Next, I started about 1 inch from the side and drew a line every inch.
It was hard to see on this shade of brown, so I used a black pen.
If you use a lighter color you could get by with a pencil.
I started sewing in the middle and randomly put the strips down as I went.
Some I folded nice and and some I crinkled up so it wasn’t too “perfect!”  🙂
 Here is a closer look.
This is a few lines into it.
I finished the first half and then flipped it around and started from the middle and worked out again.
I wanted an “envelope” closure on mine so that I could switch it out if I wanted too.
I just cut a 16 1/2 X 12 inch piece and a 16 1/2 X 10 inch piece.
I folded the one side over about 1/2 an inch to make it a nice finished edge.
I laid them on top of the pillow (right sides together, of course) and pinned it all the way around.
One tip:  if you pin it like it is in the picture above, you can sew right over it
and take them out when you are finished!
(Thanks for the tip Lisa!  I learn sometime new every day!)
Here is the finished product!  I LOVE it!
Here it is on my bed!

Your pillow turned out so cute! I made a shag pillow myself and decided that if I ever make more of them that I’d do what you did and make an envelope closure instead or just a regular pillow. Good job!
