Tutorial: Rapunzel Hair

A few weeks ago, my daughter was in a play at school about fairy tale characters.  She was Rapunzel.  She wanted to look the part, so I bought her a dress and she borrowed “a long wig” from a friend.  We loved the long hair we borrowed so much that we decided that we needed to make one for us.  Here’s how we did it.

First, I found us some “blonde” yarn.  We have blonde hair at our house, but I think it would be fun to make it whatever color of hair your girls have!  I thought it would take several skeins of yarn, but it turns out that we only used 1 large skein.

Luckily, I had an excited daughter ready to help me.  We measured yarn pieces 75 inches long, but with a fold at the top.  (So they would be a total length of 150 inches, you could make it even longer if you want!)  I sat there holding the yarn with my finger while Kaylee ran back and forth and did the cutting.

Then, we made a ring at the fold.  We twisted it and then tied a piece of yarn at the bottom of the ring.  Using the strings from the knot, wrap them around the ring over and over to make the ring stronger and more snag proof.  Once all the way around, tie another knot around the bottom of the ring again and trim the strings.

We found a place to hang our hair to make it easier to untangle and braid.  Once it is braided, I put several clear elastics (that we use in Kaylee’s hair all the time) on the end.

Because we didn’t take the time to make the ends all line up perfect, we trimmed the hair at the bottom of the braid.   Now, slip the ring over a high pony tail (add a bobby pin to help secure it) and it’s time to play!

Note:  We ordered our cute dress from Little Dress Up Shop.  They are affordable and fast.  Perfect.

  1. I bet she loved it Hol. Kaylee must have told my girls about it because they keep talking about Kaylee’s long hair. They’ll be excited to see these pictures.

  2. Oh my Gosh- Addie would DIE for this! Do you think I could make the loop at the beginning big enough for a headband, since I can’t get her hair into a ponytail that would hold that up? She would love it! good idea!

  5. ahhh!! i just made this for my goddaughter! thank you so so much for this idea! she loves tangled so i also added a shorter piece of brown “hair” and some flowers throughout the braid! it looks amazinggg!!! i can’t wait for her to use it during dress up!

  6. Thanks for sharing! I made one for my daughters this afternoon and they absolutely LOVED it! I used two chair legs about 4.5 ft apart (my oldest is only 40″) and looped the yarn around them, then cut through the loops on one end and finished the other loop the way you suggested. Their hair isn’t nearly thick enough to support it, so I took the hair comb from a cheap tiara and attached it with some extra yarn. So fun!

  7. Thanks for this. My daughter is going to a princess birthday party. This makes her Rapunzel costume! I used 2 different colors of yarn along with some gold lash yarn. It turned out amazing, If you don’t have a helper, try this: Put 3 chairs side by side. Tape the ends of the yarn onto an end chair. Leave the skeins of yarn at your feet as you wrap the yarn around the chairs. When you are finished, cut at the taped end. Fast and super easy:)
