Simple Nativity Puppets: Tutorial

Ashlee mentioned in her post last week that I have Nativity Puppets at my house and we love them!  I bought them at a boutique years ago and there is nothing on them anywhere to give credit where credit is due.  It’s a great idea and we think you should all make some!

The thing I like best about these puppets is that they are simple.  No complicated shapes, faces, or bodies, but yet they are still so cute!  Here are a few tips in making your own Nativity Puppets.

There are several ways that you could put these puppets together.  You could use sewing, hot glue, or tacky glue.  I personally like to sew, so I would sew all the puppets parts and then hot glue on the accessories.

Mary:  Pink body, corners cut.  Cream face cut from pattern piece.  Brown and white head scarf.  Side pieces of scarf are 1.5 inches by 6 inches.  The top of scarf is 2 inches by 4.5 inches.  Add a line of ribbon across top and wiggly eyes.

Joseph:  Navy blue body, corners cut.  Add 1.5 inches by 6 inches strip down the middle, with ribbon.   Then add cream face cut from pattern piece.  Tan head scarf sides are 1.5 inches by 6 inches, top is 2 inches by 4.5 inches.  Add a line of ribbon across top and wiggly eyes.

Baby Jesus:  Tan puppet, left as rectangle.  Cut swaddling clothes from batting, cream face, and brown manger all from pattern pieces.  Legs of manger are .5 inch by 5 inches.  Add a little raffia under baby as hay and  wiggly eyes.

Angel:  White body, corners cut.  Cut white wings, cream face, and yellow hair from pattern pieces.  Insert wings before gluing or sewing puppet together.  Add big hair piece, then face, then bangs.  Add wiggly eyes.

Shepherd:  Tan body, corners cut.  Cream face, sheep, and crook all cut from pattern pieces.  Charcoal or black head scarf side pieces are 1.5 inches by 6 inches.  The top of scarf is 2 inches by 4.5 inches.  Add a line of ribbon across top and wiggly eyes.  Add sheep and crook on the front.

Wise Men:  Purple puppet, left rectangle.  Body of wise men are 1.5 inches by 3 inches, one green, one navy blue, and one red.  Cut cream faces and hats from pattern pieces.  Head scarf on middle wise man is light blue.  The side pieces of scarf are .5 inches by 2.5 inches.  Top piece is 5/8 inch by 1.75 inches.  Add a jewel to each hat and wiggly eyes on each face.

Star:  Black puppet on back, the front of puppet is a black with sparkles in it.   Cut white circle and yellow stars from pattern pieces.  Add gold glitter glue for a nice touch.

It might look a little confusing at first, but once you download the pattern, it will make much more sense.  If you don’t have time to squeeze this project in this week, be sure to put it on your list to do for next year!   Your kids will love them!
