When I was pregnant with my first baby I started into the new hobby of cake decorating.
Needless to say, I started thinking about his first birthday cake WAY before the day came.
It was during this brainstorming that I came up with what I call, “Cake Carving.”
Besides color, the shape of the cake is the most fun part, right?
So I decided to get creative with shapes…
I have several Wilton cake pans in shapes of things…
(I am sure I will use them all through the years)
But for this, I was dreaming of something more simple.
My little boy has a stuffed Giraffe that he has grown attached to.
So I began dreaming up how to create a Giraffe shape for his cake…
and my “Cake Carving” was born!
I took a regular cake mix and made it in a regular 9×13 glass dish.
I removed the cake out of the dish, and let it cool completely.
I had sketched out before hand the pieces I needed to cut to create my Giraffe.
Since this was the practice cake (to try out my carving skills), I just went for it.
I took a knife and just started carving.
I had a BALL doing this! Cake Carving is fun!
Here is the finished product, frosting and all:
It’s not perfect, but I sure had fun making it!
Here are a few tips I’ve learned to help eliminate crumbs!
*White cake “carves” a lot better than yellow cake
*Frozen cake cuts like a dream
If you try this – let me know how it turns out!
I’ll be anxious to hear if you enjoyed carving shapes out of cake as much as I did!

Good tips!! I just might have to try that sometime. I know my kids would LOVE it!
That is so adorable!
Ashley this is so super cute! I love cake decorating! I am going to make a ladybug cake for the baby’s birthday. 🙂
I had to laugh when I saw this post! Your cute giraffe cake bears a striking resemblance to a cake I made for my son’s second birthday. I really like your natural colors – so much more appetizing than the obnoxious yellow and orange that ended up on my cake. Thanks for the tip about white vs. yellow cake. I always use yellow cake so that must be why I always have such a hard time with crumbles!
That is seriously the cutest cake! I’ve always thought it would be cool to take a cake decorating class, but really, I have a hard time just frosting a plain old regular cake, lol! You did a great job!
That is super cute! I have taken cake decorating classes but I haven’t been brave enough to try carving quite yet! 🙂 Cakes are so much fun!
